Background

Hillyer College was one of three colleges that joined together in 1957 to form the University of Hartford. Beginning as an evening extension program at the Hartford YMCA, and evolving as Hillyer Junior College in the 1940s, Hillyer had grown by the late 1950s into a four-year degree granting liberal arts school. After the merger, Hillyer evolved into the Arts & Sciences division of the new University. The original Hillyer College should not be confused with today's Hiller College which is an intensive two year program for students needing supplementary academic support.
For purposes of clarity, within the Archives the original Hillyer College is referred to as "Hillyer I" and the new school is referred to as "Hillyer II".
Scope and Content   This collection consists of administrative and commemorative records generated by the original Hillyer College prior to its merger with Hartford Art School and the Hartt School of Music. Material generated after that date are part of the University of Hartford Record Group.
One of the most important figures in the history of the first Hillyer College was Alan Stafford Wilson, President of Hillyer and later Assistant Provost of the School of Arts and Sciences at the University. Wilson's activities are also documented in the Alan Wilson Collection.
