The Barney School of business is one of the seven colleges within the University of Hartford. The School offers seven undergraduate and three graduate degree programs in business.
In 1958, following the creation of the University of Hartford, the departments of Hillyer College were reorganized into four schools: the School of Business Administration; the College of Education; the College of Engineering; and the College of Arts & Sciences. In 1969 the school of Business Administration became the Barney School of Business, named for Austin Barney, a founder and regent of the University.
Austin Barney, a local philanthropist and civic leader, was the driving force behind the University's earliest development campaigns. After serving in the law firm of Day, Berry and Reynolds, later Day Berry & Howard, he became counsel for the Hartford Electric Light Company in 1924. After a series of promotions he became president in 1946 and chairman in 1951, retiring in 1964.
